Mathematics Department Hires Geometric Topology Expert
FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – The department of mathematical sciences in the J. William Fulbright College of Arts and Sciences has announced the addition of Jeremy Van Horn-Morris as an assistant professor.
“Dr. Van Horn-Morris will be a valuable addition to the department,” said Chaim Goodman-Strauss, professor of mathematics and chair of the department. “He is an experienced instructor who has made a name for himself in the field with his impressive research and publications.”
Van Horn-Morris joins Fulbright College from Stanford University, where he taught calculus and linear algebra courses in 2011. Prior to his year at Stanford, Van Horn-Morris taught various mathematics courses at De Anza College in Cupertino, Calif., the Université du Québec á Montreal, McGill University in Montreal and the University of Texas-Austin. His courses have ranged from survey-level algebra to advanced calculus for engineers.
“I’m excited to join the faculty at the University of Arkansas,” said Van Horn-Morris. “My academic career has taken me many places, but none quite like Fayetteville. I can’t wait to get started.”
Van Horn-Morris researches advanced geometries, focusing on symplectic and contact topology. He has published six papers in peer-reviewed journals and presented his research at conferences and universities across the country and abroad. Van Horn-Morris also participated in geometry and topology conferences in Istanbul and Gökova, Turkey.
Van Horn-Morris earned a bachelor of science in
mathematics from the University of Oregon (2001). He holds a doctorate in
mathematics from the University of Texas-Austin (2007). His dissertation, Constructions of Open Book Decompositions,
received the Frank Gerth III Dissertation Award. Van Horn-Morris has conducted
post-doctoral research at the Interuniversity Center of Geometry and Topology
Research in Montreal (2007-2009), the Mathematical Sciences Research Institute
in Berkeley, Calif., (2010) and the American Institute of Mathematics in
Palo Alto, Calif., (2009-2011).
