History Graduate Student Wins Another Competitive National Award

Yulia Uryadova, instructor in the department of history, can add yet another fellowship to her growing list of accomplishments. She was recently notified that the International Research and Exchange (IREX) board had awarded her one of their highly competitive Individual Advanced Research Opportunities (IARO) Grants.

The IARO grant will pay for travel to Russia and Uzbekistan as well as six months of research on her dissertation, which she is completing under the supervision of Professors Gordon and Starks. Uryadova's dissertation, "At the Crossroads of Revolution: The Fergana Valley and the Russian and Iranian Constitutional Revolutions, 1900-1914," has the potential to greatly expand our understanding of political thought and social exchange in Central Asia. With her research, she will investigate more deeply the comparative experiences of Persia and Russia in the pre-revolutionary era. She is particularly interested in studying the creation of parliaments and their influence on the Central Asian region's budding democratic and liberal movements.
