FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – A University of Arkansas law professor’s presentation on foreign policy opened a recent international trade conference in Arusha, Tanzania.

Uche Ewelukwa, a professor in the School of Law, presented “Foreign Policy in the Shadow of a Global Financial Crisis: U.S – Africa Trade and Investment Relations Under an Obama Administration” to an audience that included high-level policy makers in government and experts in international economics, trade and finance. The presentation was part of the Fourth Trade Policy Centre in Africa Annual Conference, held Nov. 26-27.

Under the theme “Looking Ahead: Implications of the Global Financial/Economic Crisis on the Trade Activity Path for Developing Countries,” the conference examined the global economic crisis and how it should be approached by policy makers in developing countries, especially in Sub-Saharan Africa. To that end, the conference sought to enhance understanding of the nature and extent of the global economic crisis and its implications for developing countries. The conference further sought to offer strategies for helping developing countries to cope with the global economic downturn and to open new avenues for trade.

The Trade Policy Training Centre in Africa was inaugurated in December 2006 with the mandate of providing training and technical expertise on trade issues to professionals in least-developed countries. Located in Arusha, Tanzania, the center operates under the auspices of the Eastern and Southern Africa Management Institute and the Lund University in Sweden.

The overall aim of the training activities of the Trade Policy Training Centre in Africa is to bring new perspectives to world trade, to inspire the creation of networks in least developed countries, and to develop competencies for strengthening the capacity of these emerging countries.
