UNIVERSITY OF ARKANSAS DIVISION OF STUDENT AFFAIRS NAMES DIRECTOR FOR FUND-RAISING POST

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. - Ann Nathan, a major gifts officer for Morgan Memorial Goodwill Industries in Boston, Mass., has been named the director of development for the Division of Student Affairs, effective Jan. 7, 2002.

Nathan will play an important role in the implementation of the Division’s fund-raising priorities and institutional advancement activities. She will work closely with Randall Ferguson, Chair of the Campaign committee for the Division. Nathan will report to Clay Edwards, assistant vice chancellor for University Development and Johnetta Cross Brazzell, vice chancellor for Student Affairs.

The Division of Student Affairs enhances the University of Arkansas experience by helping students to become intellectually engaged, more self-aware and strongly bonded with the institution. The Division’s goal is to raise $13.2 million by the Campaign’s end on June 30, 2004, of which $4.6 million has been raised since July 1, 1998. The Division seeks to raise funds for many purposes including student scholarships, a new Student Health Center, a multicultural center and diversity education, and alcohol education initiatives. Through its various departments - General Student Services, the Arkansas Union, University Health Services, Career Services, University Housing and Special Projects and Services - the Division provides leadership in the development of programs and services that supplement the classroom experience and enrich the quality of campus life. The First-Year Experience will remain a primary area of emphasis during the campaign as a program designed to improve retention.

Edwards said, "We’re excited about the addition of Ann Nathan to the development operation. We feel that her experience with the design and implementation of fund-raising strategies for a wide array of non-profit organizations will be an asset to us as we strengthen our efforts to benefit Student Affairs. Her experience in campaign-related planning and activities will be important to her and to Dr. Brazzell as they expand the program."

Nathan earned her B.S. in English from the University of Michigan. Her previous experience includes working as a development associate for McCormick Bowers Associates in Boston, Mass. She participated in a CASE Fellowship sponsored by the Council for the Advancement and Support of Education in which she researched and wrote materials for capital campaign offices.

"I am excited about the opportunity to assist the University of Arkansas in strengthening its development program, particularly in the area of Student Affairs," Nathan said. "Already, I’ve seen the impact that our alumni and friends and corporations and foundations have in supporting the University and I am looking forward to building upon these relationships throughout the Campaign for the Twenty-First Century, and beyond."

In the 2000-2001 fiscal year the Division of Student Affairs hosted the Arkansas Higher Education Retention Conference, funded by a generous grant from the Winthrop Rockefeller Foundation, in which 34 of the 44 public and private institutions of higher learning in the state of Arkansas attended. Also in fiscal 2000-2001, the Division received $615,311 in private gift support.
