Student Orientation Leader Receives Regional Award

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. — Joey Smith, a junior at the University of Arkansas, has been honored with the Outstanding Orientation Student Leader award, Region IV, by the National Orientation Directors Association.

Smith, who serves as assistant director for the Orientation Program at the University of Arkansas, received his award at the NODA Region IV conference held Feb. 24-26 in Kansas City, Mo. The NODA Region IV is made up of members from universities in Arkansas, Texas, Oklahoma, Kansas and Missouri.

NODA was chartered in 1976 with the mission to provide education, leadership and professional development in the fields of college student orientation, transition and retention. Awards are given annually to outstanding professionals and contributors in the field, as well as for excellence in publications.

“Joey consistently shines in his role as an assistant director for the Orientation Program,” said Craig Willie, associate director of the UA’s First Year Experience. “Those that know Joey and have seen his dedication to serving others and humble spirit will not be surprised at his winning this award. He contributes to the success of the program in many ways while also challenging other students on staff to grow and join him in the selfless service to the newest members of the University of Arkansas family.”

“It was such an honor,” Smith said of receiving the award. “I’ve always hoped that I was making a difference and having an impact on orientation and the people who go through the entire process. It’s just nice to know that people recognize my passion for making orientation, and the transition process from high school to college, a positive and valuable experience for everyone.”

Smith is a junior at the University of Arkansas majoring in elementary education in the College of Education and Health Professions. Born and raised in Little Rock, Smith is the son of Zenobia Smith and a 2003 graduate of Parkview Arts/Science Magnet High School.
