Scenes Across Campus From Ice Storm

An ice storm shut down classes at the University of Arkansas beginning on Tuesday, Jan. 27, after freezing rain and sleet pelted the northern region of Arkansas. It was the 19th time during its history that the university has cancelled classes as a result of weather.

Although much of northwest Arkansas was without power for Tuesday and Wednesday, most of the university campus had electricity, heat and water. Essential staff served meals to students who live on campus, and workers in department of facilities management began the arduous task of clearing the sidewalks and streets across campus.

A tree called the cedar of Lebanon, a favorite hangout for undergraduates because of its long
undulating branches, lost several limbs to the ice.

Senior Walk in front of the Chemistry Building was impassable

in places where trees had either bent over under the weight

of ice or fallen completely.

Many trees, like these sweet gums on the Union Mall, lost most of their branches.

on tree limbs glitter in a moment of fleeting sunlight (right).

A light snow covering that fell late Tuesday night and early Wednesday morning
provided students a chance to sled and snowboard on the hillsides near Maple Hill
and the John W. Tyson Poultry Science Building.

A panoramic photo of Vol Walker Hall and the Fulbright Peace Fountain shows
a campus of frosty white. The temperatures just below freezing were enough to freeze
water landing on the trees and sidewalks, but not low enough to freeze the fountain.

Russellville and Trisha McWha and Megan McWha, both of Fayetteville, ventured out
on campus near the Greek Theatre.

Students wandered the front lawn of Old Main to see the damage done to the arboretum.
Many trees across campus lost numerous branches. In the background are parts
of the Starseeds sculptures crafted from white oak and river cane by students and faculty.

Tree limbs littered the campus from Old Main to Reid Hall.
