Journalism Professors Win Top Honors for University of Arkansas Documentary

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. — University of Arkansas journalism professors Dale Carpenter and Larry Foley have received the Best of Festival Award from the Broadcast Education Association for their documentary film, Beacon of Hope, the story of the University of Arkansas. The award was presented at the annual BEA Festival of Arts competition this week in Las Vegas.

Beacon of Hope is the first comprehensive documentary film about the University of Arkansas, telling the story of the university’s unique myths, traditions and history. Foley and Carpenter produced the film. Foley wrote the script and conducted the research. Carpenter was the photographer and program editor. University of Arkansas music professor James Greeson composed an original musical score. Some of the music was performed by the university’s Schola Cantorum, under the direction of Graeme Langager.

The documentary is available for purchase at the Arkansas Alumni Association’s Web site.  Beacon of Hope airs frequently on UATV Channel 14, the student-operated campus television station broadcasting on Cox Communications in northwest Arkansas.

The Broadcast Education Association is an association of professors and industry professionals engaged in teaching and research related to electronic media and multimedia enterprises. More than 1,300 professors and media professionals are individual members, and 250 college and university departments and schools are institutional members.
