Educational Experience Enhanced By Rome Relationship

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. — A special relationship with one of Rome, Italy’s largest universities provides University of Arkansas School of Architecture students a unique opportunity to immerse themselves in the culture and architecture of one of the world’s most historically and architecturally rich cities.

The school, through its Rome Urban Studies Program, is working with Roma Tre (Universita degli studi) to help students evaluate first-hand the architectural evolution of Rome. Students are taught by practicing Italian architects affiliated with the University of Arkansas and Roma Tre. In addition, computer and laboratory facilities at Roma Tre are accessible to UA students and interaction between students from both universities is encouraged.

"Working with Roma Tre offers a more authentic educational experience for the students," said Davide Vitali, Director of the Rome Urban Studies Program. Rather than simply observing a new culture, students are immersed in the Italian culture, which provides an infinite source of learning opportunities for architecture students, he said.

According to Maurizio Ranzi, a professor at Roma Tre and liaison with the Rome Urban Studies Program, the relationship creates a better platform for UA students to study the architectural standards of Rome.

"Students enter directly into the Roman reality," Ranzi said. "It’s a good experience because they are interested and happy to be here. It is great interaction between all the students, who create personal connections."

As part of the UA/Roma Tre relationship, two Roma Tre students are currently studying at the School of Architecture for one semester.

The Rome Urban Studies Program was established by the School of Architecture in 1989. It is located in the heart of Rome, next to the famous Piazza Navona, where students can study in the historical city core. Fourth-year students are required to participate for a semester in either the Rome program or the school’s Mexico City program.

Roma Tre, one of Rome’s largest universities, offers a five-year architecture degree for a small, select group of approximately 200 students. It is located in the center of Rome near the Colosseum.
