Delta Gamma Fraternity Honors UA Alumni - House To Become University House

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. - The alumnae of the Alpha Omega Chapter of Delta Gamma Fraternity are leaving a legacy of its former house to the University of Arkansas.

With a $100,000 gift from the local Delta Gamma housing corporation, the University has begun renovations on the house, located at 1002 West Maple. The fraternity constructed the house in 1940 and inhabited it until 1992. This year, Delta Gamma has also contributed $50,000 to the U of A to create the Delta Gamma - Alpha Omega Endowed Scholarship and $40,000 to the Janelle Y. Hembree Alumni House.

Once completed in the fall of 2000, the house will be called University House and hold the central offices for University Development, the UA fund-raising division. In addition, the living room, foyer and library will be open for use by the University faculty and staff. University House will be available for certain Delta Gamma alumnae events such as Founder’s Day celebrations.

If recolonization of the organization on the UA campus occurs, the house will be made available for rush events.

Ann G. Bordelon, president of the Alpha Omega House Corporation, said, "This gift by the Alpha Omega House Corporation of Delta Gamma is important. It will ensure that the building, which was home to Delta Gammas at the University of Arkansas for over 50 years, is returned to its former condition. It will also memorialize the role that Delta Gamma played in the history of the University of Arkansas."

The University House living room will feature a display of Delta Gamma memorabilia at the University.

G. David Gearhart, UA vice chancellor for advancement, said, "We are grateful to the Delta Gammas for making this generous gift so that we can continue their tradition here. Having this beautiful central location for our development staff will enhance our advancement and fund-raising efforts. Even more exciting for us is being able to provide a gathering place for the campus community."

The Delta Gamma scholarship will be for full-time undergraduate students, enrolled as juniors or seniors, who are a member of a Panhellenic group. The recipient must demonstrate academic excellence and financial need. The scholarship shall be awarded for one academic year. Previous recipients may reapply for the scholarship if they continue to meet the conditions of eligibility.

Bordelon said of the scholarship, "The endowment was an significant gift in terms of the commitment of Delta Gamma, both locally and nationally, to support Greek women as a whole."
