Applications are now open for Big Red's Buddies, the U of A's pet therapy program supporting the wellness and wellbeing of the Razorback community. The program features certified therapy dog teams made up of U of A faculty and staff and their canine companions.
Modeled after Oklahoma State University's nationally acclaimed Pete's Pet Posse, Big Red's Buddies foster meaningful connections across campus, offer comfort during times of stress and create small moments of joy throughout the academic year. Research consistently shows that interactions with therapy animals can reduce anxiety, improve mood and strengthen social connection — benefits that support both the academic and personal success of students, faculty, and staff.
Selected dog-and-handler teams will complete a four-step application process followed by a 10-week training program in January, February and March 2027. Once certified, teams will participate in campus events and outreach designed to promote belonging, mental health and community engagement. An 11-member advisory board oversees the program's policies, reviews applications and guides programming.
Faculty and staff selected to participate will be responsible for the approximate $600 total cost associated with required vaccinations and medications, veterinary exams, certifications and background checks, and the 10-week training program.
A non-mandatory information session for applicants will be held on Thursday, Oct. 15, from 3-4 p.m. in Mullins Library room 463.
The program is supported by the Ruff Razorbacks — student volunteers — who assist with event coordination, scheduling, marketing and team logistics. They also act as "handlers" at events to manage crowd control and distribute trading cards associated with the therapy dogs.
Apply now: faculty and staff interested in participating as a therapy dog team may apply via the online application form. Deadline to apply is Sunday, Nov. 1, 2026.
