The School of Art, housed in the Fulbright College of Arts and Sciences, is hosting Kathleen and Christopher Sleboda of Draw Down Books for a free public lecture at 5:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 15, in the Faulkner Performing Arts Center.
Created in 2012, Draw Down publishes small books about graphic design, typography, illustration, photography, art and architecture. The founding duo has over 15 years experience in graphic design, including working for prestigous institutions such as Yale University and Boston University. The duo has worked as graphic designers for clients and worked for institutions such as Boston University, Rhode Island School of Design and the University of Connecticut.
Previously, Christopher was director of graphic design at the Yale University Art Gallery for 15 years, and Kathleen worked as an archivist at the Beinecke Rare Books Library at Yale. They are also experts in experimental publishing, publishing as a form of community building and the continued relevance of printed matter. Their lecture will share more about the publishing industry, curating and selling design-focused books and their experiences as graphic designers.
To prepare for their visit, SoA's graphic design program — with oversight from SoA Fellows Hanna Ji and Mairi Morassut — is hosting a pop-up book display in the Studio and Design Center's Design Clinic (#203) with examples of the press' work. The display is open now from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. during the school week (unless otherwise indicated) and will stay up through Oct. 22. U of A students also get a 10% discount off Draw Down Books right now and should enter the code UARK with a valid student email address during checkout.
