Global Partnerships Bring New Students and Scholars to U of A

The U of A is welcoming a new class of sponsored and exchange students, as well as visiting scholars, to campus this fall.

A total of 34 students - 16 sponsored students, 16 inbound exchange students and two visiting scholars - are beginning their academic journey at the U of A this semester.

Sponsored students are international students who receive financial support from governments, organizations or other sponsoring entities to pursue their education at the U of A. Inbound exchange students are international students who come to the U of A to study for a limited period through an exchange partnership that also sends U of A students to study abroad at their home institution. Visiting scholars are international researchers, professors or other academic professionals who come to the U of A for a temporary period to conduct research, teach or collaborate with university faculty and students.

"We are honored to welcome these exceptional students and scholars to the University of Arkansas," said Mayra Torres, interim director of sponsored students and special programs in the Graduate School and International Education (GSIE). "Their presence reflects the strength of our global partnerships and the university's commitment to fostering international education and cultural exchange. We are excited to support them as they begin this important chapter as valued members of the Razorback community."

The Office of Sponsored Students and Special Programs works with sponsoring agencies around the world to create custom programs to support their students and educational needs. Additionally, the office works to support them during their time on campus with resources and opportunities to build community and connection with fellow students. 

This year, SSSP worked with partners including HCED, Fulbright, Fulbright Germany, the Japan and South Korea Study Abroad Foundation, Saudi Arabian Culture Mission (SACM) and Saudi Basic Industries Corporation (SABIC) to bring this fall's class of sponsored students to campus. Sponsored students represent countries including Iraq, Ghana, Botswana, Germany, Japan, South Korea and Saudi Arabia.

Additionally, two visiting scholars from Ukraine are attending the U of A sponsored by American Councils, and inbound exchange students represent countries including Spain, Australia, Germany, England, Sweden and Italy.

"We are excited to have these talented students and scholars join our campus community and enrich the University of Arkansas with their diverse perspectives, experiences and cultures," Torres said. "The SSSP team looks forward to supporting them throughout their academic journey and helping facilitate a successful transition to life in the United States and at the University of Arkansas."
