Amy White Joins School of Law Agricultural and Food Law Program

Amy White has joined the U of A School of Law as research assistant professor of law and assistant director of the LL.M. Program in Agricultural and Food Law. White brings extensive experience in food safety and food labeling law, enhancing the expertise offered to students in the LL.M. Program.

In her new position, White teaches food law and policy courses, assists with administration of the LL.M. Program and pursues funding opportunities for the program. She works closely with the law school's Journal of Food Law & Policy and teaches the course designed specifically for the Journal's staff editors. She also teaches advanced food law courses and supervises students' experiential work through the LL.M. Practicum course.

"After first coming to Arkansas as a student in the LL.M. Program, returning to the University of Arkansas School of Law brings my journey full circle," White said. "I am truly thrilled to serve our students, the law school and the program that shaped my path."

For more than a decade, White has worked in food labeling, product safety and food safety compliance with Walmart. As senior manager for Food Safety Labeling & Product Compliance, she served as the primary subject matter expert for her team, tracking 50-state regulatory shifts, monitoring federal policy and drafting objective internal guidance on the evolving enforcement landscape and regulatory risk. Her previous work at Walmart included working to standardize "Best if used by" labeling across the industry to cut down on food waste, working in weights and measures compliance, advising on labeling claim substantiation and pet food and animal feed compliance. Throughout her time at Walmart, White, a 1999 alumna of the LL.M. Program, has maintained close connections with the School of Law, frequently teaching as an adjunct instructor, mentoring students and supervising externs.

"Amy brings tremendous expertise to this position," said Susan Schneider, William H. Enfield Professor of Law and director of the LL.M. Program. "The knowledge she has gained from working with the world's largest food retailer will give our students a window into the corporate food world, and the food policy connections she has developed over the years will provide amazing opportunities. But just as important, Amy's dedication to the LL.M. Program, our students and our alumni is unsurpassed. Having her with us full time will enhance all we do."                           

Interim Dean Katheleen Guzman added, "Amy is a wonderful addition to our faculty, bringing both practical food law expertise and a true commitment to our students. I am delighted to welcome her to our law school community."

White holds a Bachelor of Science in animal science and a Juris Doctor from Michigan State University. While in law school, she served as an editor of the Journal of Medicine & the Law and published Bovine Somatotropin (BST) and Dairy Cattle, 2 J. MED. & L. 151 (1998). She has already accepted a fall speaking invitation to present at the American Agricultural Law Association Annual Symposium in Dallas, Texas, on pet food regulation.
