As the U of A welcomes students back to campus, Pat Walker Health Center (PWHC) invites you to learn more about our services and how we can help you stay healthy for a successful school year. During A-Week, our team members will host tours of the center Wednesday, Aug. 12, from 10 a.m.-12:30 p.m. Register on HogySync and then stop by the health center during tour hours. We're located on the corner of Garland and Maple avenues (525 N. Garland Ave.).
The tour will include an overview of the services offered at PWHC including medical, mental health and substance use education and recovery. We'll also share tips on how to schedule an appointment, where to find Counseling & Psychological Services (CAPS) and provide information on the variety of groups and events we offer in addition to medical care.
What Medical Services Are Offered, and Do I Need Insurance?
The first stop on the tour will be our Medical Services departments, which feature primary care and gynecological services. Similar to your family doctor back home, our physicians and clinicians are located conveniently on campus for wellness visits, physical exams, sick visits, lab and X-ray services, care for minor injuries and more.
In addition, our Allergy, Immunization & Travel Clinic offers allergy shots, immunizations - including flu and MMR vaccines - and can help you prepare for travelling abroad.
Be sure you have your insurance card with you when you arrive for a medical appointment, as we do bill for medical services. If you don't have insurance, student health plans are available at uark.myahpcare.com. We also offer a discount for self-paying patients. Talk to our intake team to learn more about insurance and additional coverage options by calling 479-575-4451 or visiting health.uark.edu.
What Mental Health Services Are Available?
The health center offers two mental health care options. The first is with CAPS, located on the second floor of the health center. CAPS offers a wide range of mental health services to students, including short-term individual counseling, group counseling, 24/7 emergency mental health services and case management. Walk-ins are always welcome at CAPS.
Most CAPS services are covered by the Student Health & Wellness Fee. To learn more about CAPS' services and events, visit health.uark.edu/mental-health. To contact CAPS with questions, for an appointment or to reach their 24/7 emergency mental health crisis line, call 479-575-5276.
The second option for mental health care at PWHC is through the Medical Services department with our psychiatric care team. Our psychiatrists provide care for a range of mental health concerns to students, faculty and staff at the university. To schedule an appointment, call 479-575-4451, Option 1. The Medical Services Department does bill for psychiatry appointments. Self-pay options are also available.
What Are SEAR and RRC?
The Substance Education, Assessment & Recovery (SEAR) and the Razorback Recovery Community (RRC) programs are located on the second floor of PWHC. SEAR provides direct individual and group interventions to university students with alcohol, cannabis and other substance-related concerns. RRC offers support for students in recovery. Their mission is to help students overcome substance use issues, achieve academic success and promote personal and professional growth.
SEAR and RRC offer a variety of events and group meetings throughout the academic year to engage and educate students. Whether you're an ally, sober curious or in active recovery, there's a place for you at SEAR.
Through its Stay RazorSharp campaign, SEAR reminds Razorbacks to make smart, safe decisions, look out for their friends and be aware of their surroundings. The S.T.A.R. mindset includes:
• Staying safe
• Taking care of yourself
• Addressing social norm misconceptions
• Reducing stigmas
Information about SEAR and RRC, including upcoming group meetings and events, may be found at health.uark.edu/sear. To contact SEAR or RRC, call 479-575-2500.
