The Sam M. Walton College of Business is announcing two academic leadership appointments that will help guide the college's nationally recognized accounting and finance programs into the coming academic year.

Beginning in mid-July, Cory Cassell will serve as chair of the Department of Accounting. A longtime member of the Walton College faculty, Cassell has built a reputation as a dedicated scholar, educator, and colleague who is deeply committed to the success of the department's students, faculty, and staff. He assumes the role with the full support of the college's leadership team.

"Cory is exceptionally well suited to lead the Department of Accounting," said Dean Brent Williams. "His commitment to excellence, collaborative leadership style, and dedication to our faculty, staff, and students will serve the department well in the years ahead."

Beginning July 1, Gary Peters, senior associate dean, will also serve as interim chair of the Department of Finance for the 2026-27 academic year while the College prepares for a renewed national search for a permanent department chair.

Peters brings extensive leadership experience to the position, including eight years as a department chair and a deep understanding of the college's academic mission and departmental operations.

"Gary's experience and day-to-day familiarity with our academic enterprise make him exceptionally well prepared for this role," Williams said. "I am grateful for his willingness to serve and know he will lead with the collaboration and transparency that have long defined his leadership."

The appointments also provide an opportunity to recognize two department leaders whose service has strengthened the Walton College over the past three years.

Williams expressed his appreciation for Jonathan Shipman, outgoing chair of the Department of Accounting, whose thoughtful and strategic leadership has positioned the department for continued success.

"Jonathan leaves the department in a position of real strength," Williams said. "We are grateful for his vision, leadership, and the lasting impact he has made on the college."

Williams also thanked Alexey Malakhov, outgoing chair of the Department of Finance, for his leadership and many contributions during his tenure.

"Alexey helped strengthen the department through successful faculty recruitment, renewed attention to our curriculum, and thoughtful stewardship of its operations," Williams said. "We appreciate his dedicated service and the many contributions he has made to the Walton College."

The Walton College congratulates Cassell and Peters on their new leadership roles and extends its sincere appreciation to Shipman and Malakhov for their dedicated service to the college and its students.
