Kaaron "Jody" Davis, director of student records for the Dale Bumpers College of Agricultural, Food and Life Sciences, retired this year after nearly 40 years of dedicated service to the University of Arkansas.
Davis began her University of Arkansas career in 1987 as an office, laboratory and field assistant in the Department of Crop, Soil and Environmental Sciences — a position she held while completing her undergraduate studies. After earning her Bachelor of Science degree in animal science in 1991, she transitioned to a full-time role as professional assistant to Duane Wolf, supporting both his research program and his undergraduate students for nearly 20 years.
During that time, Davis developed expertise in the college's curriculum and advising systems, work that eventually led to her move to the college's Dean's Office. She served as curricular affairs coordinator from 2010-15, director of advising and student records from 2015-19 and most recently as director of student records, a role she has held since 2019.
"Jody Davis has been the steady hand and trusted voice behind our academic programs for more than 30 years," Jeff Edwards, Bumpers College dean, says. "Her institutional knowledge is unmatched, and faculty, staff and administrators across Bumpers College have long relied on her judgment, professionalism and deep understanding of curriculum and graduation requirements. I have met few people who have earned the respect and admiration of such a broad group of colleagues, and her impact on Bumpers College will be felt for years to come."
In that position, Davis served as the primary point of contact for AFLS undergraduate students navigating advising, graduation requirements, veteran and athletic eligibility clearances, and the college's Honors Program. Her work has been the quiet backbone of the college's student success operations — the kind of institutional knowledge and steady presence difficult to quantify and impossible to replace.
"For more than 30 years, she has been the steady, brilliant cornerstone of Bumpers College and an irreplaceable embodiment of our land‑grant mission and the values that make this college feel like home," Jacquelyn Mosley, associate dean of the college, says. "She is the definition of dedication, service and institutional excellence. She has been the guardian of student success from beginning to end, managing all things graduation for every single Bumpers student. She handled degree audit issues, answered Honors questions, resolved academic concerns and ensured every requirement was in place long before a student crossed the stage. She has been, without question, the most knowledgeable person in the college when it comes to navigating student support, academic processes and all the nuances that only decades of experience can teach."
Davis grew up on a small farm near Farmington, Arkansas, where she was shaped by two very different models of education and hard work. Her father, Aaron, was a craftsman and horseman whose self-taught expertise earned the respect of all who knew him. Her mother, Martha, earned her Ph.D. and became a professor in the very department where Jody would later begin her career, ultimately publishing the textbook Scientific Papers and Presentations — a book Jody co-authored along with her mother and sister.
True to her upbringing, Davis has been known throughout her career for her open-door policy and genuine willingness to help anyone who came to her — students, faculty, staff and colleagues alike. Whether answering a question about a graduation audit or offering guidance to a first-generation student, she approached every interaction with patience, care and expertise.
Her last day was May 15. The campus community joins in celebrating Davis and wishing her well in the next chapter.
"She has been the heart, the history and the guiding compass of Bumpers College," Mosley says. "Her impact is immeasurable, her dedication unmatched and her legacy felt in every student she has helped cross the finish line. Jody has been a true pillar of this institution and someone we were profoundly grateful to have and we will miss her, but wish her well."
