Matt Ganio, currently the associate dean for academic and student affairs in the College of Education and Health Professions, has been appointed to the associate dean for graduate education in the Graduate School and International Education, effective July 1.
Ganio has served in his current role since 2021, where he works with undergraduate and graduate programs to develop and grow programs in alignment with strategic direction and initiatives of the college. Additionally, he oversees advising and student success initiatives, among other duties.
"I'm excited to be a part of GSIE's positive momentum and eager to work with the school's team and the many colleges and units across campus with which it collaborates," he said. "I look forward to bringing my passion for graduate education to the work I do with GSIE."
Prior to his work as associate dean, Ganio held positions as the head of the Department of Health, Human Performance and Recreation and the director of the Exercise Science Research Center. In total, he holds 15 years of experience at the U of A in both faculty and leadership roles.
As associate dean for graduate education, Ganio will work to develop and promote graduate education on campus, advocate for graduate students, support graduate student success initiatives and monitor compliance with graduate and university policies, among other duties. He will supervise the Offices of Graduate and International Admissions, Graduate Student Support and Testing Services, in addition to GSIE's six interdisciplinary graduate degree programs.
"We are thrilled to be welcoming Dr. Ganio to our leadership team in the Graduate School and International Education," said Ed Pohl, dean of GSIE. "During the interview process, we were impressed by his vision for graduate education, collaborative leadership style, approachable demeanor and ability to foster strong, authentic connections with colleagues and students alike. We look forward to the impact he will make as he helps shape the future of graduate education at the University of Arkansas."
Ganio will replace Ed Bengtson, who will retire from the university June 30 following a 16-year career at the U of A, highlighted by his role in GSIE and as department head of curriculum and instruction in the College of Education and Health Professions.
"Dean Bengtson has exemplified steady leadership and a calm, measured approach that has helped guide our unit forward," Pohl said. "We wish him all the best in retirement and in the next chapter ahead."
Ganio holds a bachelor's degree in exercise science and a master's degree in exercise physiology from the University of Georgia, as well as a doctorate in kinesiology from the University of Connecticut.
