University of Arkansas students have the opportunity to earn three hours of course credit by participating in the Lunch Buddy Mentoring Program during the spring semester. Lunch Buddy Mentors are matched with a local elementary school student and visit the school twice each week to spend lunchtime together.
Through these regular visits, mentors help foster positive peer relationships, encourage healthy social behaviors, and provide supportive connections for their mentees. Students who commit to the program and successfully complete all required coursework receive three academic credit hours.
Interested students must complete a screening interview, attend a short training session, and consent to a criminal background check. Mentors are also expected to have reliable transportation and be available for two hours, twice per week, during school lunch periods (approximately 10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.).
The program is open to students from any college at the university and welcomes participants from all classifications, from freshmen through seniors.
The course instructors are Timothy Cavell and Jessica Rice. For more information, please contact Maranda Overholt (overholt@uark.edu) or Georgia Young (georgiay@uark.edu)
