The city of Fayetteville is moving forward with phase two of the Maple Street Safety Improvements project that began last summer.
The final phase of construction will require the closure of both lanes of Maple Street from Garland Avenue past Leverett Avenue, beginning Monday, May 11. Both sidewalks of Maple Street will be closed as well as the east sidewalk of Garland Avenue from the Maple Street intersection to the University Bookstore.
Crews are expected to work on the project for the whole summer and reopen the street for the fall semester.
Project managers worked together to develop a working timeline that would take place after commencement ceremonies and before the onset of the new school year, minimizing the overall impact during the academic schedule.
Signage will be posted to direct traffic around the construction site. Drivers and pedestrians are encouraged to use Cleveland Street as the best detour route.
Project Background
The U.S. Department of Transportation established the Safe Streets and Roads for All grant in 2022 to help prevent roadway fatalities and serious injuries around the country.
In 2023, the City of Fayetteville was awarded a grant as part of the Safe Streets and Roads for All project, which is funding 75% of the construction costs for the Maple Street bicycle lane project. Fayetteville and the U of A are contributing the remaining 25% of the funding.
Some of the features of the project will include improved crosswalks, updated driving lanes, greenspace along the road, new senior walks on both sidewalks and the addition of a dedicated bicycle lane.
Facilities Management and the Office for Sustainability at the U of A are partnering with Fayetteville's Transportation Division to manage the project. More information, including frequently asked questions, can be found in the Office for Sustainability's summary.
Stadium Drive Closure
An unrelated road improvement project will take place on Stadium Drive this summer, also set to occur from Monday, May 11, until early August. The construction will close both lanes of Stadium Drive from Meadow Street to the entrance of the Stadium Drive Parking Garage.
Access to Meadow Street and the Stadium Garage will remain open during the closure.
