The U of A is celebrating the graduation of Cohort Six of the UARK Leaders Program, marking the completion of a six-month leadership development experience designed to strengthen leadership capacity and advance the university's strategic priorities.
Developed through a "One University" lens by the Office of Human Resources, the UARK Leaders Program brings together a diverse group of faculty and staff from across campus. Through intentional collaboration, education, exposure and experience, participants build the skills and perspectives needed to lead people effectively, navigate complexity and contribute to the university's continued success. From October through April, Cohort Six participated in interactive professional development sessions, leadership assessments, a 360-degree feedback survey, individual coaching and peer learning opportunities. Program content is grounded in the university's strategic pillars of advancing student success, achieving research excellence and strengthening the university's reputation as an employer of choice.
A signature component of the program is the action learning projects, which challenge participants to work in cross-functional teams on real-world university initiatives. Sponsored by campus leaders, the projects require participants to apply strategic thinking, collaboration and problem-solving skills. Teams presented final recommendations to senior leadership, offering innovative approaches to complex institutional challenges.
"As our university continues to evolve, investing in our people is one of the most important ways we move forward," said Amy Ochoa, senior associate vice chancellor for human resources. "UARK Leaders creates the space for faculty and staff to reflect, stretch and build the relationships and confidence needed to lead. Cohort Six showed a strong commitment to their own growth and to the broader mission of the university, and that impact will continue well beyond the program."
Participants are selected through a competitive nomination and interview process that identifies individuals with demonstrated performance, leadership potential and readiness for expanded responsibility. Cohort Six included faculty and staff who lead people, programs and large-scale initiatives, bringing a wide range of perspectives and expertise to the learning experience.
Reflecting on the cohort's progress, Ashley Ingram, senior HR director of talent development, talent management, engagement and experience, said the experience highlighted the power of shared learning and collaboration. "From early conversations about self-awareness to their final Action Learning Project presentations, Cohort Six consistently leaned into challenge and supported one another," Ingram said. "Their willingness to collaborate across roles and units strengthens not only the program but the university as a whole."
With their graduation, Cohort Six joins a growing network of UARK Leaders alumni who are helping shape the future of the U of A through thoughtful leadership, collaboration and service. Applications for the seventh cohort of the UARK Leaders Program will launch this summer.
