The U of A Department of Music's Music Education Program will host a Modern Band 101 Workshop on April 18 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., welcoming educators, students and community members interested in contemporary approaches to music teaching and learning.

The workshop will feature guest clinician David Dockan of Louisiana State University, who will lead hands-on sessions focused on modern band pedagogy, including popular music performance, student-centered learning and inclusive ensemble practices.

Modern Band emphasizes instruments such as guitar, bass, keyboards, drums and voice, while incorporating technology, improvisation and songwriting. The workshop is supported by Music Will, a national nonprofit dedicated to expanding access to popular music education through teacher training and classroom resources.

Participants will explore practical strategies for implementing modern band in diverse classrooms through guided ensemble experiences and collaborative learning activities.

"This workshop reflects our commitment to preparing future music educators who can meet students where they are musically and culturally," said Daniel Abrahams, coordinator of music education. "By bringing in leaders like Dr. Dockan, we are able to offer meaningful professional development that bridges research and practice."

The workshop is free and open to pre-service and in-service music educators as well as U of A students and the public. Registration is required. For more information or to register, visit Music Will's professional development page at https://musicwill.org/professional-development/.
