M.J. Ferguson, a political science senior at the U of A, has been selected to participate in the 2026 Ralph Bunche Summer Institute at Duke University.

The program, named for Ralph J. Bunche, encourages students to pursue careers in political science by providing scholars with opportunities to participate in writing and research workshops, develop statistical skills for data analysis and explore questions relevant to the discipline. The institute also introduces participants to leading industry professionals and scholars, educates them about career opportunities and provides assistance with finding and applying to Ph.D. programs in the field.

When asked about the opportunity, Ferguson credited the department and his academic mentor, Najja K. Baptist, with giving him the tools to make this possible.

"Being accepted into the Ralph Bunche Summer Institute is yet another confirmation of what can be achieved when one truly connects with the outstanding faculty and resources the University of Arkansas Political Science Department has to offer," Ferguson said. "My research mentor, Dr. Najja K. Baptist, recognized my potential long before I even knew I wanted to pursue a Ph.D. in political science, and it's moments like these that allow me to look back and see how his intensive mentorship and guidance have illuminated this path all along."

Bunche, a 1950 Nobel Peace Prize winner, was the first African American to receive a Ph.D. in political science. The program is a prestigious opportunity for students from underrepresented backgrounds seeking to pursue advanced degrees in the field.

Speaking on Ferguson's accomplishments, Baptist highlighted his pride in his mentee's hard work. "M.J.'s achievement is nothing short of stellar. He is among the best this university and the department have to offer. Mentoring someone of his caliber is seamless. We wish him the best!"

In addition to Baptist, Ferguson extended his appreciation for the efforts of educators Alejandra Campos and Dara Gaines of the U of A, Vincent Hutchings and Robert Mickey of the University of Michigan and D'Andra Orey of Jackson State University. He was particularly proud to mention the love and support of his family, as well, for inspiring him to excel.

"I am honored and excited to represent the University of Arkansas at the Ralph Bunche Summer Institute and to shine a spotlight on the lived experiences of my community through innovative research methods," Ferguson said.
