Applications Open for New Pet Therapy Program Launching in 2026

Applications are now open for Big Red's Buddies, a new pet therapy program launching in fall 2026 to support the wellness and well-being of the Razorback community. The program will feature certified therapy dog teams made up of U of A faculty and staff and their canine companions.

Modeled after Oklahoma State University's nationally acclaimed Pete's Pet Posse, Big Red's Buddies aims to foster meaningful connections across campus, offer comfort during times of stress and create small moments of joy throughout the academic year. Research consistently shows that interactions with therapy animals can reduce anxiety, improve mood and strengthen social connection — benefits that support both the academic and personal success of students, faculty and staff.

Selected dog-and-handler teams will complete a four-step application process followed by a 10-week training program in May and June 2026. Once certified, teams will participate in campus events and outreach designed to promote belonging, mental health and community engagement. An 11-member Advisory Board will oversee the program's policies, review applications and guide programming.

Faculty and staff selected to participate will be responsible for the approximate $600 total cost associated with required vaccinations and medications, veterinary exams, certifications and background checks, and the 10-week training program.

In the coming months, the university will also recruit student volunteers for Ruff Razorbacks, a new student group that will support Big Red's Buddies by assisting with event coordination, scheduling, marketing and team logistics.

Big Red's Buddies will join a growing number of university-based therapy dog programs nationwide that enrich campus culture and promote emotional well-being. The U of A looks forward to welcoming its inaugural class of therapy dog teams and launching this new community resource in fall 2026.
