City to Make Intersection of Maple and Gregg a Four-Way Stop
From the City of Fayetteville:
As part of the Maple Street Safety Improvement Project, the intersection of West Maple Street and North Gregg Avenue will be converted to a four-way stop on Thursday, Sept. 18, 2025.
The Maple Street Improvements Project is a comprehensive reconstruction of the half-mile corridor between the Razorback Regional Greenway and Garland Avenue. The project aims to improve pedestrian safety, add a two-way protected bike path, address drainage concerns and reduce vehicle speeds — all while enhancing the street's appearance and creating a more inclusive, accessible space for all users.
The intersection of West Maple Street and North Gregg Avenue has limited sightlines due to the concrete railings of the historic railroad bridge. Converting it to a four-way stop will improve safety and allow north-south traffic on North Gregg Avenue to cross Maple Street more efficiently, enhancing overall circulation around campus. The addition of stop signs will also improve safety for the many pedestrians who use this intersection, as well as cyclists travelling on the new bike path that will connect to the Razorback Greenway.
The Maple Street Improvement project was awarded $7.5 million by the U.S. Department of Transportation 2023 Safe Streets and Roads for All grant with matching funds from the City of Fayetteville and the University of Arkansas.
More information can be found on the Maple Street Improvements webpage. U of A Facilities Management, in partnership with the City of Fayetteville, will launch phase 2 of the Maple Street Safety Improvement Project in the summer of 2026.
