True Burger at U of A: Serving Fresh Flavor and Funding Student Futures
FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – A fresh take on burgers is doing more than satisfying appetites at the University of Arkansas, it’s changing lives. True Burger, a Chartwells Higher Education concept, has now contributed over $200,000 in scholarships to students through an innovative partnership with the U of A’s Division of Student Affairs.
The idea for True Burger began when Chartwells’ contract with a well-known, burger focused concept was set to expire. Rather than renew, the team saw an opportunity to create something unique for the Fayetteville campus: a simple, high-quality menu featuring fresh Angus burgers, a move away from frozen patties toward a focus on quality over quantity.
But the innovation didn’t stop at the menu. Chartwells decided to take the royalty fee from sales and redirect it into scholarships for U of A students. Partnering with the Division of Student Affairs ensures that funds are awarded to students or groups most in need. Student Affairs also notifies recipients ahead of time, giving them the opportunity to promote the program and, in turn, help increase the amount awarded.
Every purchase at True Burger contributes directly to this scholarship initiative, with 5% of sales returned to Student Affairs each quarter. Sales are tracked weekly, and checks are delivered quarterly, creating a consistent, growing source of support for students.
“The decision to tie the program to a percentage of sales came from the students themselves,” said Chad Hall, Director of Marketing. “They wanted to find a way to give back to their peers, and we wanted to make that possible.”
Since its launch, the program has inspired growth well beyond Fayetteville. True Burger has expanded to campuses across the country, carrying with it a legacy that began at the University of Arkansas.
“The decision to tie the program to a percentage of sales came from the students themselves,” said Chad Hall, director of marketing. “They wanted to find a way to give back to their peers, and we wanted to make that possible. When you buy a meal at True Burger, you're not just enjoying a great burger — you're helping a fellow student get one step closer to earning their degree," Hall added. "It's a simple, delicious way to make a difference.”
True Burger is located inside the Arkansas Union on the U of A campus and is open from 10:30 a.m. to 10:30 p.m. Monday to Friday.
