The Arkansas Philological Association seeks paper proposals for its 52nd annual conference, which will take place Friday and Saturday, Nov. 14-15, at the Arkansas Union on the U of A campus in Fayetteville.

This year's APA Conference will be hosted by the Department of English at the U of A.

The deadline for proposals has been extended to Aug. 1.

This year's conference will focus upon the themes of confinement and freedom. Paper topics proposed around these themes may range widely, as may the disciplinary or cultural lenses through which those themes are explored and critiqued.

We encourage writers in all fields to submit paper proposals. Paper topics might include (but are not limited to):

  • Confinement and/or freedom re: the use of language, rhetoric or composition
  • Confinement and/or freedom re: literacy
  • Confinement and/or freedom re: pedagogy or pedagogical practice
  • Confinement and/or freedom re: literature, literary analysis or literary genre
  • Freeing texts through translation
  • Experiencing freedom through creative writing
  • Confinement and/or freedom re: film/television
  • Confinement and/or freedom re: theatre, dance or other forms of performance
  • Confinement and/or freedom re: art
  • Confinement and/or freedom re: video games
  • Confinement and/or freedom re: social media
  • Confinement and/or freedom re: popular culture
  • Experiencing freedom in prison through the creative process
  • Responding to slavery through the creation and promotion of personal narratives
  • Moving beyond cultural borders through linguistic or non-linguistic communication
  • Experiencing freedom through food
  • Confinement and/or freedom re: historical analysis
  • The confining impacts of environmental change
  • Experiencing freedom through nature or efforts at sustainability
  • The confining and/or liberating impacts of AI
  • The connection between mental and physical confinement and/or freedom
  • Freedom through areas of interdisciplinary research or collaboration (e.g., comparative literature, cultural studies, medical humanities, digital humanities, gender studies)
  • Confinement and/or freedom re: religion or philosophy
  • Confinement and/or freedom re: geography or regional studies

To submit a paper proposal, send the following to apa2025@uark.edu by Aug. 1:

  • Your full name
  • Your status (faculty, graduate student, undergraduate student, independent scholar)
  • Your institution (if affiliated with one)
  • Title of your paper (creative pieces welcome)
  • Abstract of 200 to 300 words regarding the topic of your proposed presentation

If accepted to the conference, presenters will be required to pay a registration fee: $75 for faculty/independent scholars; $50 for graduate students. Undergraduate students can participate for free but will need to pay $25 if they wish to become members of the APA.
