In a timely and vital episode of Rooted Wisdom, the podcast dives deep into the challenges and resilience of the poultry industry in Indian Country. The first installment of this special series features Dr. Fred Dustin Clark, a member of the Choctaw Nation and associate director of the Center of Excellence for Poultrry Science/Extension Poultry Health Veterinarian at the U of A.

Clark brings decades of experience and a lifelong passion for poultry to the conversation, offering a sobering yet hopeful look at the ongoing avian influenza crisis.

"This is the largest outbreak in animal disease emergency that we've experienced in the United States," Clark said. "...over 166 million birds have tested positive and been humanely euthanized. It's been detected in all 50 states and Puerto Rico [at the time of recording in March]."

The episode highlights the emergence of a new H7N1 strain in Mississippi, adding to the ongoing H5N1 outbreak that began in 2022. Clark explains the science behind the virus, its rapid mutation and the critical role of wild waterfowl in its spread.

"We're trying not to get used to it," he emphasized. "These viruses mutate rapidly … and now we've got two strains to worry about."

Listeners are guided through practical, actionable biosecurity measures to protect both backyard and commercial flocks. From quarantining new birds to disinfecting shoes after visiting parks, Clark stresses vigilance.

"Biosecurity is any and everything you can do to prevent an outbreak of disease in your birds — and to contain it if it happens," he said. "The virus only has to breach it once."

Clark also addressed the economic ripple effects, particularly on egg prices, noting that recovery takes time due to the lifecycle of replacement hens.

"It takes about six months to get back to production after a loss. So yes, egg prices have been affected — but not the eggs themselves."

This episode is a must-listen for anyone involved in poultry production, from Tribal producers to backyard hobbyists. It underscores the importance of community, education and proactive care in safeguarding flocks across Indian Country.
