UAPD to Offer Free Upcoming 'Stop the Bleed' Events
To prepare for National Stop the Bleed Month this May, the U of A Police Department wants the campus community to know how to save a life.
On April 23 in the Connections Lounge at the Arkansas Union, tables will be set up to demonstrate how to properly apply a tourniquet. In addition, attendees will be able to practice "packing a wound" and applying a pressure dressing.
A classroom-style Stop the Bleed training will be held from 2-3:30 p.m. Wednesday, April 30, at the Arkansas Union, room 507. No registration is required.
In many cases, bleeding is a preventable cause of death. The ability to recognize life-threatening bleeding and the ability to intervene effectively can save a person's life. Whether a bleeding injury is the result of a home accident or shooting, one person who is on the scene, at the right time, with the right skills can make a life-or-death difference.
Often the person who is right beside a bleeding victim may be the person who is most likely to save them. One of the goals of the Stop the Bleed initiative is to turn civilians into "immediate responders" — a term that describes the first person at the scene of an injury. This person is rarely a trained medical provider.
