After the tremendous success of two record-setting FundRazor endowment campaigns for the Maxine Miller Legacy Fund, the gender studies program is delighted to announce the competition for the first cohort of Maxine Miller Scholars. Named after luminary business owner Maxine Miller of Maxine's Tap Room, Maxine Miller Scholars are selected based on the strength and innovation of their research projects, which must examine gender issues in a humanities field.

The Maxine Miller Scholars program is open to both undergraduate and graduate students enrolled in courses at the U of A for fall 2025. Scholars in the 2025 cohort will receive $1,000 in funds to pursue a research project of their design. Gender studies minors and graduate certificate candidates are especially encouraged to apply.

To be considered, candidates will submit one .pdf inclusive of:

  1. A two-page project proposal with a project abstract, a short bio/background and sources
  2. A specific line-item budget for a $1,000 research award and justification for spending
  3. A current CV

Candidates must abide by current procurement policies at the U of A and may not be used for salary replacement or personal remuneration. For more information about approved expenses, visit the U of A Procurement site

Deadline for submission is by midnight April 23. Submit here.

All recipients must agree to acknowledge receipt of the Maxine Miller Scholars research award and the gender studies program at the U of A in any work published as a result of funding. Funding must be spent by Dec. 31, 2025.
