U of A Art History Professor Publishes Criticism in Top Contemporary Art Magazine
Davida Fernández-Barkan, teaching assistant professor of art, has two articles in this month's issue of Artforum. The publication has become the magazine of record for contemporary art since its founding in 1962.
One of Fernández-Barkan's articles in the April issue is a column focusing on the new Vladem Contemporary outpost of the New Mexico Museum of Art in Santa Fe, New Mexico. The essay both evaluates the museum's current exhibition, "Off-Center: New Mexico Art, 1970-2000," and assesses Santa Fe's treatment of Chicano community murals produced during the same period as the works in the show. She also published an article reviewing artist Erika Wanenmacher's recent exhibition at SITE Santa Fe.
Fernández-Barkan frequently contributes criticism to contemporary art publications, including Artforum, The Brooklyn Rail and ASAP/Review. She is a scholar of international and intercultural modernisms, with articles published in American Art, Public Art Dialogue, Social Semiotics and Panorama. She writes and lectures in Spanish as well as English; her recent essay, "Roberto Montenegro en la periferia muralista," appears in the edited volume Reflexiones sobre la producción periférica de ideas (ed. Luciano Concheiro), published by the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (2024).
Fernández-Barkan joined the faculty at the U of A in 2024. She holds a Ph.D. in history of art and architecture from Harvard University and an M.A. in curating the art museum from the Courtauld Institute of Art, and has worked or interned in curatorial departments at the National Gallery of Art, the Institute of Contemporary Art/Boston, the Centre Georges Pompidou and Tate Britain. She teaches classes in modern, contemporary and global art history, including the university's Art Lecture basic course.
