U of A Wind Ensemble to Perform at SHE: Festival of Women in Music

The U of A Wind Ensemble will be a featured ensemble at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, March 15, during the seventh annual SHE: Festival of Women in Music. The band is led by director of bands Christopher Knighten.

The program will consist of music by female composers, including the premiere of an original work for horn and concert band by U of A alumna Jennifer Rose (BA '02). The piece, Ozark Awakening, will feature assistant professor of horn Katey Jahnke and is supported by the Women's Giving Circle, the U of A Bands and the Department of Music.

Other works by Conni Ellisor, Jennifer Jolley and Michele Fernandez round out the program:

  • March! (2021) – Jennifer Jolley (b. 1981)
  • Tiny Dancer (2022) – Jennifer Jolley (b. 1981)
    • Roxee Jo Boyd, percussion, featured performer
  • Ozark Awakening (2025) – world premiere – Jennifer Rose (b. 1978)
    • Dr. Katey Jahnke, assistant professor of horn, guest soloist
  • Unidad en Ritmo (2023) – Michele Fernandez (b. 1969)

The concert is free to attend and will be held at the Faulkner Performing Arts Center on the campus of the U of A. A livestream will also be available at bands.uark.edu.


About the University of Arkansas Bands: The University of Arkansas Bands Program, part of the Department of Music in the Fulbright College of Arts and Sciences, began in 1874 and is one of the oldest band programs in the country. The program has seven ensembles including the Razorback Marching Band, Hogwild Band, and five concert bands with over 400 student members representing every college at the university.
