As severe weather season approaches, the week of March 2-8 has been designated as Arkansas' Severe Weather Awareness Week by the National Weather Service. In order to stay safe during severe weather, make sure you understand the risks, safety measures and how to be prepared.

Understanding the Risks

Northwest Arkansas is no stranger to severe weather, with thunderstorms, tornadoes and flash floods posing significant threats. Severe thunderstorms characterized by winds of at least 58 miles per hour, hail the size of a quarter or potential tornado conditions are common in the region.

Tornadoes, the most destructive form of severe weather, require immediate action when warnings are issued.

Consider the DUCK method to stay safe:

  • Down to the lowest part of your home/building
  • Under something
  • Center of house/building
  • Keep away from windows and exterior doors

Safety Measures and Preparedness

Everyone should understand the difference between a Tornado Watch and a Tornado Warning. A watch means conditions are favorable for a tornado, while a warning indicates that a tornado has been sighted or detected by radar.

If a tornado threatens the campus directly, and the campus community needs to seek shelter immediately, the U of A Police Department will send a RazALERT message and activate the campus outdoor warning sirens.

It is recommended that everyone has at least two ways to receive emergency weather notifications and have an emergency kit with essentials like water, non-perishable food, a flashlight, batteries, a first-aid kit and any necessary medications. Keep this kit in an easily accessible location or, better yet, take it with you when you take shelter.

Community Involvement and Resources

U of A Emergency Management offers various safety and emergency preparedness trainings, including Building Emergency Action Plan training. This training covers how to stay safe during fire, tornadoes and active threat events. If you would like to request this training, please contact Jessica Post, emergency manager, via email at jsanborn@uark.edu.

Severe Weather Awareness Week is a vital opportunity for the U of A community to enhance their preparedness for the upcoming severe weather season. By staying informed and taking proactive measures, we can ensure the safety and well-being of everyone on campus.
