University of Arkansas Students Embark on Outdoor Adventure at Big Bend Ranch State Park
A group of adventurous U of A students took part in an unforgettable excursion over Thanksgiving break, traveling to Big Bend Ranch State Park in West Texas. The trip, organized by University Recreation and Wellness' Outdoors program, gave participants the opportunity to explore the rugged landscapes and diverse ecosystems of one of the most remote parks in America.
During the adventure, trip leaders Paige Miller and Wyatt Boehm plus three students spent the week backpacking through the Rancherias Loop and sleeping in tents along the mountains. Backpacking through the Rancherias offers an immersive experience, weaving through remote desert landscapes and high mountain ridgelines. The trail system in Rancherias takes hikers deep into the park's wilderness where they can experience the vast solitude and beauty of the Chihuahuan Desert.
The trail's elevation changes, and varying terrain offer a rewarding challenge for backpackers, while the remote campsites allow for an unforgettable night under the stars in one of the darkest places in the United States.
"When we were doing heavy water carries or climbing a steep long hill, the group rallied together and encouraged each other," said Paige Miller, UARK student and trip leader. "By the end of each day we were exhausted, but everyone was proud of what they accomplished and what the group as a whole had completed that day."
The trip was part of a series of outdoor adventure trips offered by University Recreation and Wellness to provide students the opportunity to connect with nature, develop new skills, and encourage belonging with peers outside of the classroom.
