Recently, the Gamma Eta Chapter of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity Inc. proudly celebrated 50 years of brotherhood and service at the U of A. As the first historically African American fraternity established on the U of A campus, Gamma Eta has been a trailblazer in promoting diversity, academic excellence, leadership and community involvement. Rooted in the fraternity's motto, "Friendship is Essential to the Soul," Gamma Eta members continue to embody the cardinal principles of Omega Psi Phi: manhood, scholarship, perseverance and uplift.

Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. was founded on Nov. 17, 1911, on the campus of Howard University in Washington, D.C., by three undergraduate students, with the guidance of their faculty adviser. The Gamma Eta Chapter was established on Dec. 7, 1974, and officially chartered on Feb. 18, 1975. This marked a significant milestone in the fraternity's history and a transformative moment for the U of A as it became home to a fraternity devoted to fostering a sense of community and achievement among its members.

Over the past five decades, the Gamma Eta Chapter has made an indelible impact on the U of A and its surrounding communities. Its members have excelled in academics, athletics, leadership and service. Notable alumni include Corliss Williamson, a standout on the 1994 NCAA Men's Basketball National Championship team; Randy Brown Jr., who made history as a student body president; and Dr. Lonnie Williams, a charter member of the chapter who dedicated many years of service to the university.
