Last summer semester, Forrest Eagar, a junior in architecture, received the highly competitive Critical Language Scholarship, funded by the U.S. Department of State. He spent summer studying intensive Russian at the American University of Central Asia in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan.

For the Critical Language Scholarship, Eagar completed two semesters of Russian. Besides aiming for fluency in Russian, Eagar is also advanced in Portuguese and Italian and is fluent in Spanish. Before starting his bachelor program, he volunteered for two years for the Church of Jesus Christ in various Spanish-speaking cities along the U.S.-Mexico border. Coming from Greenwood, Arkansas, he hopes to build sustainable housing in the United States and in former Soviet republics.

"I am currently participating in the C.L.S. program in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan, where I am immersing myself in the Russian language and Kyrgyz culture for a few months," Eagar wrote of his experience. "So far, my adventures have taken me to the breathtaking locations of Issyk-Kul and Song-Kul, as well as on some exhilarating local mountain hikes. During my trips to these lakes (the Kyrgyz word 'Kul' means 'lake' in English), I had the unique opportunity to stay overnight in traditional yurts, which are deeply rooted in the local nomadic culture.

"Living with a host family in Bishkek has been a pivotal part of my experience, providing full language immersion. My host family speaks both Russian and Kyrgyz, which has naturally led me to pick up some Kyrgyz alongside my Russian studies. I attend classes every weekday, where my dedicated teachers focus on improving our speaking, reading, writing and listening skills. The support and encouragement from my teachers have been invaluable. There are 27 students in the program, and we have quickly formed strong bonds with each other. I believe that by the end of this program, we will have many lifelong friends and connections, making this experience truly unforgettable.

"Outside of classes, I spend a lot of time in the city [Bishkek], engaging in various activities and using Russian in everyday interactions. This practical application of the language has significantly enhanced my learning experience. The C.L.S. program not only offers an academic challenge but also a rich cultural immersion that will leave a lasting impact on my personal and professional life."
