Data is a valuable asset; however, improper storage practices can lead to data breaches or loss, potentially compromising sensitive information. Using secure data storage practices contributes to a safer digital environment for everyone.

  • Control Access to Your Data: Only share data with individuals who need access and are authorized to view or edit the information. Use access controls, such as passwords or permissions settings, to limit who can view, edit and share your data.

  • Be Cautious With Public Wi-Fi: Avoid accessing or transferring sensitive data over public Wi-Fi networks, as they can be easily intercepted by cybercriminals. If you use public Wi-Fi, be sure to connect to a virtual private network (VPN)

  • 3-2-1 Rule: Keep three copies of your data; two to be stored on different media platforms and one offsite (e.g., physical copy) or in the cloud.

  • Update and Patch Regularly: Keep your devices, software and applications current with the most recent updates. Enable automatic updates where possible to ensure protection.

  • Enable MFA: Use strong, unique passwords for all accounts and enable MFA for an additional layer of security.

  • Dispose of Data Securely: When data is no longer needed, delete it securely using tools that permanently erase files, ensuring they cannot be recovered.

Following these best practices for data storage will help safeguard your personal information. Secure data storage isn't just about technology but also about adopting mindful habits that prioritize security. For further guidance or support, visit the IT Help Portal.
