U of A Senior Addresses Global Leaders at United Nations Change Conference
U of A senior Amelia Southern-Uribe speaks at the United Nations Climate Change Conference in Bonn, Germany.
U of A senior Amelia Southern-Uribe was fully funded to attend and speak at the United Nations Climate Change Conference, SB60, in Bonn, Germany. This prestigious event marks the 60th session of the Subsidiary Bodies under the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, consisting of the Subsidiary Body for Scientific and Technological Advice and the Subsidiary Body for Implementation.
SB60 plays a crucial role in advancing the objectives of the UNFCCC by preparing for the annual Convention of the Parties. The outcomes of SB60 will directly influence the next meeting of the Convention of the Parties, providing essential inputs for global decision-making and action on climate change. The conference addresses critical aspects of climate change mitigation, adaptation, finance and capacity-building.
Amelia Southern-Uribe has been invited to speak on behalf of the recent pause of liquefied-natural-gas projects and the state of U.S. youth climate activism. Her participation highlights the growing influence of young leaders in the global climate movement and their crucial role in advocating for sustainable policies and practices.
Meeting biannually in June and then alongside each COP session, the Subsidiary Bodies' meetings provide essential insights into the UNFCCC's goals. SBSTA links scientific findings, including those from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, with policy needs, while SBI oversees the implementation of the UNFCCC (along with the Kyoto Protocol and Paris Agreement). The work undertaken at SB60 will lay the groundwork for an efficient and successful COP29. The COP29 presidency will be in attendance, hosting informal consultations with stakeholders to inform the work program and key outcomes sought at COP29, and is expected to announce a comprehensive action plan for COP29 at the conclusion of the SB60 negotiations.
