Russian Eurasian Student Organization Hosts Lecture on Solzhenitsyn and Navalny

The Russian Eurasian Student Organization will host a lecture by professor Katherine Hill (Reischl), former professor of Russian at Princeton and Stanford, at 5 p.m. Monday, April 22, in J.B. Hunt Center room 206. Titled "The Figures of Dissidence: Solzhenitsyn to Navalny," this lecture will look at the recently deceased opposition leader as a "dissident" icon and also analyze the 20th-century author and Gulag prisoner Alexander Solzhenitsyn. The lecture will investigate the ways in which gazes, from inside and outside a totalitarian regime, inform the ever-evolving picture of dissidence and what it might suggest about our modern systems of image making. 

 In 2018, Hill published the book Photographic Memory: Cameras in the Hands of Russian Authors, published by Cornell University Press in 2018. She is also a creator of the Digital Humanities project on Playing Soviet on Soviet children's books. 

Besides the lecture, professor Hill is also giving a workshop from noon to 1 p.m. Monday, April 22, in J.B. Hunt 207. The workshop is titled "Translating Cultures: What can we do to take our humanities training to the business world?" The workshop will focus on how practices from language and cultural training in the humanities have direct relevance to how we communicate and thrive in the business world. Pizza will be served at the workshop.
