Student Organizations to Volunteer, Participate in Hogeye Marathon
The Arkansas Athletic Training Student Association and the U of A Running Club encourage students, faculty and staff to get involved with the Hogeye Marathon to be held in Springdale on April 20 & 21.
The U of A Running Club has many involved in running in the various events over the weekend. The Arkansas Athletic Training Student Association has provided volunteer medical support at the relay stops and finish line for the past 12 years and will continue that tradition this year.
Aidan Rheay, president of the U of A Running Club, said, "We hope students can get involved in the race and become more connected with the NWA running scene, whether it be racing or helping to volunteer at the event. Anyone working with the Hogeye races can be proud that they are helping to be a part of a great event in Northwest Arkansas."
The Hogeye Marathon is a community event with the sole purpose of raising money for local charities (as opposed to many local running events that make money for profit). In the past five years, more than $150,000 has been donated from the event. This running race and associated events have been held since 1977, when it started on the university campus.
The Hogeye Marathon is a high-quality running event including a marathon (Boston Marathon qualifier), marathon relay (four-person teams), half-marathon, 10k and 5k. The event involves many in the community. There are also awards for teams who run various events during the weekend. Opportunities for involvement extend beyond running the events. Opportunities include volunteer medical coverage (for healthcare professionals and healthcare students), course monitors (for anyone), water/aid stations (for anyone), course entertainment and event coordination. Four-person teams are encouraged to run the marathon relay - perhaps as a departmental competition.
"The Hogeye Marathon is a great running event that thrives because of the involvement of so many volunteers," said Brendon McDermott, faculty adviser for AATSA and Hogeye Marathon medical coordinator. "I am excited to see our university volunteer and get involved helping the local community."
