The U of A Police Department recently recognized the exemplary achievements of its officers and staff while welcoming a cohort of new members to its ranks. The annual UAPD Awards Banquet showcased the dedication, professionalism and commitment to service that defines the department's mission. 

Among the esteemed awards presented during the banquet were: 

  • Officer of the Year Award: Cpl. Chris Ramey earned this award for the second year in a row for his outstanding contributions to the department. This recognition reflects his exceptional performance across various critical metrics, such as building and lot checks, parking citations, accidents worked, case reports completed, etc. 

  • DWI/DUI Enforcement Award: Not just one, but two awards for Cpl. Chris Ramey, who was recognized for his exceptional efforts in combating drinking and driving.  

  • Marksmanship Award: Lt. Aaron Mahan claimed the gold, with Sgt. Ryan Barber and Cmdr. Matt Mills securing silver and bronze, respectively.  

  • Physical Fitness Award: Benjamin Lowe earned first place for conquering the half-mile obstacle course in an outstanding four minutes and six seconds. David Robertson powered through to secure second place, and Kendell Davis showcased agility and endurance with a well-deserved third place. 

  • Coveted Badge Award: Lakshmi Thyagarajan was recognized for outstanding service to the U of A Police Department on matters of Fiscal Affairs. 

  • Civilian Service Award (outstanding contributions from non-sworn personnel): Public Safety Officer Hailey Houston was recognized for her diligence in accepting extra responsibilities, such as becoming a RAD (Rape Aggression Defense) instructor and working special events. 

  • Community Oriented Policing Award: Officer Sie Singmuongthong was acknowledged for fostering community connections and engagement.  

  • Employee of the Year: Officer Trevor Mitchell was unanimously chosen by the Command Staff as the recipient of this year's prestigious "Employee of the Year" award. 

  • Larry Slamons' Award: Telecommunications Supervisor Elizabeth Brown was honored for her unwavering dedication to the department and her pivotal role in coordinating with the university's facilities management team to renovate the UAPD communications center. 

In addition to recognizing these outstanding achievements, the UAPD also welcomed a cohort of new officers to its team. Kendell Davis, Benjamin Lowe, Dalton Solley, Joshua Wherry, Jonathan Maclin, Patrick Ghesquiere, Allie Dugan and Junior Juarez were warmly welcomed as they start their journey with UAPD. 

"The dedication and professionalism exhibited by our officers and staff are truly commendable," remarked Chief Stephen Gahagans. "These awards not only recognize individual excellence, but also highlight our collective commitment to serving and protecting the University of Arkansas community." 

The UAPD continues to uphold its mission of ensuring the safety and security of the campus while fostering positive relationships within the community. As new members join the team and existing members are recognized for their achievements, the department looks forward to continuing its tradition of excellence in law enforcement and community service.
