Department of Music professor Moon-Sook Park and six former voice students are participating in a performance art exhibition at Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art called Sonic Blossom. It's an ongoing participatory installation that involves a singer in a designed costume approaching a museum visitor to offer the gift of song—the singer's choice of one of five lieder (songs) by the composer Franz Schubert—accompanied by a piano recording.

The alumni participating are Dennise Adkins, Theodor Carlson, Juan Garcia, Nina Garavito, Raquel King and Lisa Kulczak, along with vocalist Dennis Brewer.

Each singer will participate in Sonic Blossom on a rotating basis, identified by the transformation robe they will be wearing during performances. The robe is designed by New York-based artist Kelima K, who created the cloak to transform the wearer into a magical being, bestowed with the power to give the gift of music. They will be available in the galleries Thursday to Monday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

The creation of Sonic Blossom came from artist LEE Mingwei while tending to his mother after surgery, and envisioned the piece as it captures the heart of unconditional care by having performers sing one of the lieder to museum guests who accept the gift.

LEE Mingwei's Sonic Blossom will be on view from Sept. 6 through Oct. 2. To learn more about the exhibition, visit the Crystal Bridges website.
