Sigma Delta Pi Holds 2023 Initiation Ceremony

The induction ceremony for the 13 new members of the national honors society in Spanish, Sigma Delta Pi, was held at the World Languages & Digital Humanities Studio on April 26. The induction was led by the faculty adviser, Rachel TenHaaf, assistant professor of Spanish.
Following the induction, current Sigma Delta Pi members said goodbye to the outgoing president, Elizabeth Black, and outgoing treasurer, Samantha Hernandez. New officers were then elected for the 2023-24 school year: Amelia Stevens, president, and Shaelyn Frauenhoffer, treasurer.
About Sigma Delta Pi: Sigma Delta Pi is the national collegiate Spanish honors society. It signals commitment to excellence in Spanish as well as certifying academic achievements. Sigma Delta Pi offers national and local opportunities for networking, community involvement and resumé building activities. Eligibility for induction includes a high overall GPA and an outstanding record of GPA and course requirements in Spanish. For graduate students, membership requirements are completion of two graduate courses in Spanish, Latin American or US Latino/a Literature; overall GPA of 3.2 or above; GPA of 3.0 in all Spanish courses; pursuing an MA in Spanish or Ph.D. in comparative literature (emphasis on Hispanic lit); and no incidents of academic dishonesty.
This association has the largest foreign-language honor society in existence. It will help bolster students' credentials for any professional field, including business. Students will have access to resumé enhancing as well as national and local leadership possibilities. Students will also be eligible for exclusive undergraduate awards for study abroad in a Spanish-speaking country.
Sigma Delta Pi is a great opportunity to meet others in the Spanish major or minor, participate in community service events and earn scholarships for study abroad. To apply for membership, students must be second semester sophomores or beyond, completed at least one Spanish or Latin American history or iterature course, have an overall GPA of 3.2 or better with a 3.0 GPA in Spanish courses and must be a Spanish major or minor.
