Martha Anderson, director of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion and head of the Digital Services Department for the University Libraries, has been selected by the American Library Association as the 2023 Lois Ann Gregory-Wood Fellow. Anderson will receive a stipend to attend the ALA 2023 Annual Conference in Chicago as well as the 2024 LibLearnX experience in Baltimore.

Founded in 1876, the American Library Association is the oldest and largest library association in the world. The award is designed as a conference scholarship program to "encourage understanding and participation in the ALA governance processes."

"Service has been one of my priorities throughout my careers, from elementary educator to business executive, and now an academic librarian," Anderson said. "Service, life-long learning and contributing to the organizations I belong to is simply part of how I live my life." She noted interest in the LAGW Fellowship to learn more about ALA governance to "contribute to the ALA in a higher capacity. … I am enticed by the idea of having a mentor to navigate the ALA governance meetings. The knowledge gained during these experiences will aid me in serving better the ALA."

Anderson said she looks forward to contributing to the American Library Association in a higher capacity.

"Martha has done an exceptional job in both of her roles here at the University Libraries, and it is wonderful to see her engagement in librarianship recognized by the largest organization in our profession," said Jason Battles, dean of libraries. "As the 2023 Lois Ann Gregory-Wood Fellow, Martha will have an opportunity to learn about the governance of this important national group with an explicit purpose to build future participation and leadership."
