Earthquake Recovery and Response Continues in Turkey and Syria; Campus Support Resources Available
The university community is deeply saddened by the destruction and loss of life resulting from the catastrophic earthquakes in Turkey and Syria. The event has taken tens of thousands of lives and caused millions of people to flee their homes.
Some in the university community may have been personally impacted by this tragedy. University resources are available to help those in need of assistance:
- We encourage international students impacted by this tragedy to reach out to an international student adviser for help. International Student Support may be reached by phone at 479-575-5003 or by email at iss@uark.edu. Appointments may also be scheduled online at https://international-students.uark.edu/about-iss/contact.php.
- Counseling and other mental health services are available at the Pat Walker Health Center through the university CAPS program. Visit our CAPS resource page for information regarding mental health services, campus outreach programs and community mental health resources: https://mentalhealth.uark.edu.
For those in our campus community who wish to support emergency response efforts, the US Agency for International Development (USAID) Center for International Disaster Information has identified certain aid organizations working on the ground in Turkey and Syria.
Additionally, the Turkish embassy in Washington, D.C. is requesting the following items to help survivors:
- Disaster tents
- Blankets
- Sleeping bags
- Floor mats for disaster tents
- Bed chairs
- Heaters (220V compatible or with converter)
- Generators (220V compatible or with converter)
- Portable restrooms and lavatories
- Shipping containers
