Shelbey Myrick was selected as August's Student Leader of the Month.

Junior Shelbey Myrick has been selected as the Student Leader of the Month for August 2022. Originally from Siloam Springs, Myrick came to the U of A to study communication sciences and disorders. She is currently a student success guide within the Cordia Harrington Center for Excellence on campus. This past spring semester, Myrick worked with the EMPOWER Program on campus. She has also helped with New Student Orientation, the HIP (High Impact Practices) conference and has had first-hand experience working with higher education programs.

When Myrick thinks of a leader, she thinks of someone who is teaching while doing. She believes that great leadership involves someone standing by your side and guiding you along the way. Myrick said great leaders are encouraging, patient and understanding.

"Being a leader doesn't feel like something you strive to do," she said. "Being a leader happens when you are working hard and helping others along the way."

Myrick's favorite leadership quote is from Kenneth H. Blanchard: "The key to successful leadership is influence, not authority."

She thanked Kathryn Lammers for being an amazing mentor throughout her journey.

"Kathryn embodies all of the important qualities of a leader," Myrick said. "She is encouraging, patient, helpful, kind and hardworking. I don't think I have enough words to express how incredible Kathryn is."

The Student Leader of the Month award, sponsored by New Student & Family Programs, recognizes U of A undergraduate students for their excellence in leadership through campus involvement, leadership activities or through volunteer and community service.
