Denim Day: Pick up Jeans to Decorate This Week

Denim Day: Pick up Jeans to Decorate This Week
UA Productions Staff

Join University Programs in creating a community art exhibit for Denim Day in the Anne Kittrell Art Gallery to show support for survivors of sexual assault. Students can pick up jeans and a decorating kit from Monday, March 28, through Monday, April 4, in the University Programs Office.

Participating students can return the decorated jeans in the UP office from Monday, April 11, to Friday, April 15, to then have them displayed in the art gallery! The exhibit will open on Monday, April 18, and be open the rest of the month. All of the jeans were kindly donated by Beautiful Lives Boutique. This event is a part of University Programs' Sexual Assault Awareness Month Series.

Content Warning: Mentions of sexual assault

About Denim Day: In 1992, an 18-year-old Italian woman was raped by her 45-year-old driving instructor. She reported the incident to authorities. He was then convicted of rape and sentenced to jail. Years later, his conviction was appealed to the Italian Supreme Court on the argument that the sex was indeed consensual because the young woman's jeans were tight, and she must have helped him remove them. The supreme court agreed and overturned his conviction.

We wear jeans on Denim Day to support sexual assault survivors and as a reminder that no matter what you wear, consent is never implied. Denim Day is April 27.
