Guest Lecture With World Food Prize Winner Rattan Lal Wednesday

Lal's lecture is 3:30 p.m. Wednesday in AFLS Room D115. He was president of the Soil Science Society of America from 2006-08 and the International Union of Soil Sciences from 2017-18.

World Food Prize recipient Rattan Lal is holding a virtual distinguished lecture for U of A students where he will discuss the intersections of climate change, natural resource conservation, and food and nutritional security.

Lal's appearance is set for 3:30-5 p.m. on Wednesday in AFLS Building Room D115. Students across campus are invited to join either in person or on Zoom.

The lecture is being hosted by the International Programs Office in the Dale Bumpers College of Agricultural, Food and Life Sciences.

Lal is a Distinguished University Professor at Ohio State University (since 1987) and was a soil physicist at the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture in Ibadan, Nigeria, from 1970-87. He researches soil carbon sequestration, soil health, conservation agriculture, soil restoration and sustainable management.

He has authored 1,000 journal articles, 550 book chapters and written or edited 100 books.

Lal was president of the Soil Science Society of America from 2006-08 and the International Union of Soil Sciences from 2017-18.

He is a member of the 2021 United Nations Food Systems Summit Science Committee and Action Track 3, which focuses on "Coalition 4 Action on Soil Health." Lal is laureate of the Global Confederation of Higher Education Associations World Agriculture Prize (2018) and has won the Glinka World Soil Prize (2018), Japan Prize (2019), U.S. Awasthi Indian Farmers Fertilliser Cooperative Prize of India (2019), Arrell Global Food Innovation Award of Canada (2020), World Food Prize (2020) and Padma Shri Award (2021) of the Government of India.
