Senior Anthony Kammerer has been selected as the Student Leader of the Month for January 2022. Originally from Kansas City, Missouri, Kammerer came to the U of A to study civil engineering. A member of the Honors College, he recently completed his term as president of Beta Theta Pi, was a senator for the Associated Student Government and served as the director of transit and parking for ASG. In addition to his involvement, Kammerer likes to volunteer at Habitat for Humanity and the Salvation Army. 

He said he got involved in these organizations because he wanted to connect with other students and make a difference at the university. He said he wanted to "not only make friends, but also make an impact on the University of Arkansas community." 

Kammerer believes the most important quality a leader should possess is active listening. His advice for other students is to keep in check with yourself.  

"While it may be stressful at times to be a leader, don't be afraid to take a mental health break and recharge," he said. "You'll be much more effective in the long run." 

Kammerer would like to thank Bennett Montgomery, a U of A alumnus, for being such a great mentor to him.  

"He was the president of Beta Theta Pi before me," Kammerer said. "He was great at teaching me how to listen and invest in other people on your leadership team." 

Kammerer's favorite leadership quote comes from former Pres. Harry S. Truman: "Men make history and not the other way around. In periods where there is no leadership, society stands still. Progress occurs when courageous, skillful leaders seize the opportunity to change things for the better."
