Food Science Hosting Howie-Hickey for Seminar on Exercise as Medicine

The Department of Food Science and the Center for Human Nutrition invite you to virtually attend a free seminar featuring Erin Howie-Hickey on Monday at 3:05 p.m., Monday, Sept. 20. Howie-Hickey will give a talk titled "Exercise is Medicine: Health and Fitness at the University of Arkansas and Beyond."  

Howie-Hickey will discuss the latest research on the benefits of physical activity for physical and mental health, from COVID-19 to depression, including what the science can say about the optimal dose and intensity. She will share recent data collected by the Exercise is Medicine team on physical activity, fitness and wellness in the U of A community and discuss future directions and opportunities.

Howie-Hickey is an assistant professor of exercise science in the Department of Health, Human Performance and Recreation in the College of Education and Health Professions at the U of A. She is an adjunct research fellow in the School of Physiotherapy and Exercise Science at Curtin University in Western Australia. She earned her Ph.D. in exercise science from the University of South Carolina and her Bachelor of Science in kinesiological science from the University of Maryland. Howie-Hickey has been published more than 100 times, and her research has been funded by the National Institutes of Health and the National Health and Medical Research Council of Australia.

Her research focuses on children's physical activity, particularly the effects of physical activity on educational outcomes. In addition to implementing diverse interventions to increase physical activity, she measures complex patterns of activity, including sleep and sedentary behaviors. The ultimate goal of her research is to promote positive physical activity behaviors to enhance physical and mental health across the lifespan. She is the faculty adviser for Exercise is Medicine, which aims to promote physical activity among students, faculty and students at the U of A and in the local community.
