FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – The English Department's Program in Rhetoric and Composition has selected Bailey White as the winner of the 2019 Jessie O'Kelly Freshman Essay Award for her essay The Unseen Folklore of Dia de los Muertos.

The selection committee — composed of faculty members and graduate teaching assistants — also named Hannah Huber and Morgan Greer as finalists.

The Jessie O'Kelly Freshman Essay Award Contest looks to recognize exceptional writing from first-year composition courses. The contest takes place annually, and the call for essays is usually announced in February.
